Mastering Your Deadlift with RPE
The deadlift is the most taxing lift in any program. Accurate deadlift RPE calculation is critical to prevent central nervous system (CNS) fatigue. Because deadlifts are often performed with less volume than squats or bench, every set must be perfectly dialed in.
Deadlift Training Strategies
Many elite powerlifters deadlift only once or twice a week. Using RPE allows you to determine if you should go for a heavy single today or drop the load for more volume. If you're feeling sluggish, an RPE 8 might be significantly lower weight than usual, but the training effect remains consistent.
- Sumo vs Conventional: While the calculator works for both, keep in mind that your RPE calibration might differ slightly between variations.
- Grip Fatigue: If your grip is the limiting factor, your RPE will rise faster than your true leg and back strength. Be sure to account for this in your rating.
